ZUJ Suspends National Executive Member Grail Kupakuwana

Kupakuwana is a national executive member of ZUJ and is accused of being central to the arrest of Golden Maunganidze, a journalist with the Masvingo Star.

Maunganidze wrote a story alleging a senior Zanu PF politician from the province had stolen tonnes of sugar meant for President Robert Mugabe’s 86th birthday. He did not mention anyone in his report but Walter Mzembi, Tourism Minister, reportedly sent Kupakuwana to dig out the sources of the story.

While in Masvingo Kupakuwana allegedly sent text messages to Maunganidze pretending to be following up on the same story. The errant journalist is alleged to have sent text message responses from Maunganidze to the Minister.

Mzembi immediately filed criminal defamation charges against Maunganidze. The charges were early this week thrown out for lack of evidence.

Kupakuwana has since distanced himself from the alleged misconduct saying he travelled to Masvingo to do some public relations consultancy work for Mzembi and was never involved in Maunganidze’s arrest.

ZUJ secretary general, Foster Dongozi said: “Following complaints from comrades from Masvingo that a senior official in the union had engaged in unethical and unprofessional conduct, the ZUJ national executive consulted and debated the issue and resolved to suspend comrade Grail Kupakuwana pending investigations.”
