Cape Town, April 28, 2014 – President Jacob Zuma has acknowledged the role former President FW De Klerk played in ending apartheid.
Zuma was speaking at the unveiling of a bust of former president Nelson Mandela in front of the National Assembly.
Guests invited to the unveiling included Mandela family members, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, former National Assembly speaker Frene Ginwala, cabinet ministers and deputy ministers.
Provincial premiers, Cape Town’s mayor Patricia de Lille, members of the diplomatic corps and civil society organisations’ representatives also attended the unveiling.
Zuma says it’s clear that De Klerk had the interest of the country at heart.
President Jacob Zuma says it’s appropriate to have a symbol of Madiba in the precincts of Parliament, as the institution has played a pivotal role in dismantling apartheid.
